Ride the Lightning
by Douglas A. Cox
Ten, nine, eight, seven
We count the seconds down.
Soon the silver ship will fly
Unleashed from the ground.
Six, five, four, three
The colors of old glory
Unfurled in the summer breeze
Remind us of our story.
Now at last, two, and one
The lift-off of a nation
Freedom isn't always free
America has just begun.
Throttle up into the blue
Into the great unknown
Courage, risk and triumph
It's how our Country's grown.
So celebrate America
And hug the ones you love
Look to the sky this 4th of July
There's lightning up above.
"On everyday, in every life, we are faced with events and choices that
require courage. That is what it means to be an American, to Ride the Lightning!"
